Predicted Geocentric Distances

The lunar distance calculator on this site performs its calculations on our web server so you do not need any special software or installed spreadsheet program. Any basic web browser will do.

After you take a lunar distance sight (you can skip the altitudes of the Moon and other body if you like), you will need to enter some almanac data and some basic setup data. First enter your assumed or dead reckoning (DR) latitude and longitude. This position is used to calculate the altitudes of the objects (not required to high accuracy) and to calculate the error in your lunar observation. Also enter the index correction for your sextant, or enter zero if you prefer to do your index correction before entering data in the calculation form.
